Rasa with Oxfordshire Theatre Company presents
Handful of Henna
Written by Rani Moorthy
Directed by Karen Simpson
Thurs 28 - Sat 30 Jan @7.45pm
Press Night Thurs 28 Jan @ 7.45pm + experience a handful of henna
HANDFUL OF HENNA is an evocative new play, by the performer and writer, Rani Moorthy. Thirteen year-old, Nasreen is being dragged back to the family home by her mum, Saheeda, to attend a wedding. The petulant teenager is annoyed at being separated from her friends and her mobile phone, not to mention being far away from her comfort zone so continues to bait and irritate her mother.
But thanks to the mystical powers of henna, and a little bit of help from the wagging tongues of the Aunties, Grannies and neighbours, Nasreen discovers some unexpected truths about her mother's past. Skipping back and forth across time and between two cultures, four actresses create a bustling, colourful world bursting with music and celebration.
Based on true life stories, Handful of Henna explores the mystical and healing powers of henna, which is used traditionally in celebrations, body adornment, and as an antidote to ward of evil spirits and nightmares. With warm humour and moving drama, Handful of Henna reveals how mother and daughter's fractious relationship is cemented by this cooling and soothing plant.
Based in Manchester, Rasa produce exiting and heart-warming drama that unites both South Asian and Western theatre. (Credits include: Curry Tales, Shades of Brown), whilst Oxfordshire Theatre Company has been specialising in touring high quality theatre to rural areas.
Handful of Henna opens at Watermans on January 28 before going on a national tour until 28 March at various venues around the UK. www.rasatheatre.co.uk

Comedian, Inder Manocha will be developing his new show at the Watermans Studio in time to run it in before Edinburgh. Inder says: "the show I'm developing is about whether there's been multicultural progress in my lifetime. It's called Barack to the Future."
Manocha, a quick witted and incisive comedian, read modern history at Jesus College, Oxford, and then worked as a therapist. He began his career as a stand up after being a finalist in So You Think you are Funny & Hackney Empire New Comedy Acts of the Year in both in 2001. In 2004, he was named 'Best Comedian' at the EMMA (Ethnic Multicultural Media Achievement) awards in 2004, and he made his Edinburgh debut in 2006. Manocha also performs as an actor and recently appeared in the independent feature film, The Blue Tower (winner of the Best UK Feature at the Raindance Film Festival, 2008).
Manocha's brand of comedy explores multiculturalism and pokes fun at political correctness as it appears in day to day scenarios. He will be appearing at Watermans Studio every Thursday night from 7 January until 18 February. To make it even more of an evening he will be accompanied by, Juliet Meyers who will be performing a piece titled Wheely Suitcase.
This chatty comedian, also presents more work in progress whilst contemplating life's dilemmas, travel, love and almost everything apart from Peter Andre and Jordan about whom she couldn't give a monkeys (although there is stuff about monkeys)!
Why not come and see the creative process in action? Every evening will be different.
