Campaigners' war memorial plan

world_war_mem_4_mg-main.jpgA group of residents and traders in Brentford have launched an ambitious bid to relocate and restore a church's memorial to parishioners who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Great War.

The Brentford High Street Steering Group is holding a major fundraiser to pull in the funds needed to move the monument at St Lawrence's Church to Brentford Library.

The library is home to the town's other memorials to those who died during the 1914-18 and 1939-45 wars and is the focus of Brentford's annual Remembrance Day services.

Local estate agent Julia Quilliam, whose brother Gary was killed in the 2006 Nimrod crash in Afghanistan while working for the RAF, said: "The memorial is in desperate need of restoration and is sitting all on its own. A lot of people have asked for us to do something about it.

The group is hoping to apply for a grant from War Memorials Trust but needs estimates from approved stone masons, which alone can cost up to £400.

The fundraising event will be held on September 26 at Watermans arts centre and will include a dinner, dancing and an auction. For more information call 020 8847 4737.
