A Small Fortune

Posted by Michael Edmondstone on Jul 15, 08 01:18 PM in Boatman's Blog

Carlos is clearly in good fortune. A kayak washed up against Flamenco- sleek and blue, fully intact and ready to use. The tender may have gone, but this is some compensation. I was at work when it appeared. Carlos said he was sitting on the steps to the island a few afternoons back and this apparition of a kayak floated from upstream and straight toward the steps. He didn't even need to get wet to retrieve it.

I'd only ever been in a kayak once before, when I was about 11 and paddling in the polluted waters of the Solent. And I'd forgotten how much fun it is- what a feeling! There's so much control with the paddle- each movement of it under the water directs the nose and propels you forward, back, around or brakes. You're so close to the water and moving so smoothly through it that the feeling must be a bit like that of a duck's!

So I spent a while yesterday just paddling around the island, enjoying the Great British Summertime and wondering what you're meant to do if you capsize.

Still no luck with our tender, or with Dan's yacht.

We'd like to hear from you.
