A Brentford subsea engineer and flying lecturer recently released his first novel to great reviews.

Lorne Gifford wrote the 'true to life action thriller', The Andaman Express, to encourage more people to enter the profession of engineering.

Lorne said: I used to help out at school careers fairs, where I quickly discovered that teenagers have absolutely no idea what professional engineering is all about.

"Since Jurassic Park made paleontology exciting and the matrix did the same for computer programmers I thought I would have a go at doing something similar for engineering. The lack of engineers in this country is a big problem."

The book which was described as "a stunning and gripping first novel" in a recent review, is based on Lorne's experiences in Thailand and Burma and he hopes it will eventually be turned into a film.
