Signs of the City: Metropolis Speaking

Posted by Watermans Art Centre on Oct 10, 08 01:57 PM in Clubs/societies

Signs of the City: Metropolis Speaking is a year long European youth media art project, which explores the sign systems of four cities - Barcelona, Berlin, London and Sofia.

The project engaged around 300 young European city dwellers in a collective process investigating the signs of their cities and documenting their urban life through use of digital cameras and GPS loggers.

Signs of the City - Metropolis Speaking was initiated by Berlin-based youth art organisation urban dialogues, with Watermans, as lead UK partner.

Young people guided by professional artists, explored concepts of citizenship, urban culture and diversity. The UK exhibition has been curated by pupils of Northolt High School, along with artists, Melissa Bliss, Douglas Nicolson, Terez Osztafi and Erica Scourti. It combines six focal elements that best characterize experience of urban contemporary life: streets and transport, buildings and architecture, street art and creativity, chill out and playgrounds, sky and interaction.

CITIPIX is the interface between the four cities. This online database has gathered all the images produced in the workshops and turned them into a contemporary archive which is freely accessible. Anyone can select images from this archive to create their own personal interpretation of the signs that are there in order to re-imagine the modern European metropolis.
