Fatality fears at accident 'blackspot' in Brentford

The six-lane route through north Brentford has seen a number of accidents in the last two years and as a main road it is TfL's responsibility to improve and maintain it, they claim.

"We've had a number of calls and emails recently about the number of accidents and the difficulty in crossing the road," said Cllr Harmer.

"We have met with Hounslow's senior traffic officers and they have told us they will lobby TfL to improve the junction with Windmill Road."

The councillors said residents have told them the crossing has become a 'nightmare' and there had been a number of near misses.

"The accident figures show that there are other junctions that have more accidents and are more likely to get improvements," said Cllr Cadbury.

"However, many of the accidents are not reported to the police. This junction is heavily used by children walking to and from Our Lady & St John's Primary School and we don't want to wait for a more serious accident before action is taken."

Cllr Cadbury added the road layout is badly designed, causing confusion between drivers and pedestrians and leading to a number of collisions.

Both councillors and residents claim there is bound to be a fatality if something is not done soon.

But a TfL spokeswoman said: "In the three years ending May 31, 2008, there were nine collisions at the junction, one resulting in a serious injury from a car mounting a pavement.

"None of the collisions involved a pedestrian crossing the road and the majority were minor shunts.

"We are investigating to see what improvements may be made to the junction."
