Akademi Site Specific dance piece "Initium" arrives

Posted by Watermans Art Centre on Aug 25, 09 01:39 PM in What's On

initium_photoshopped_image.jpgThis is a bright lively, free dance performance event to re-energise Hounslow High Street, come and do your shopping and be entertained at the same time!

Akademi's Initium is running riot around the country, adapting to and transforming each performance space it encounters. From mountains to mansions, Initium takes its chameleon magic anywhere, absorbing and reinterpreting the landscape. A chair becomes a stage. A wall becomes a proscenium arch.

Imagine a street. An ordinary street in the city. Car engines rumble beneath pedestrian chatter as life whirls about an urban landscape. Out of nowhere comes a sound -- A sound that belongs to another time and space. It's the sound of the shennai luring you into another atmosphere. The air smells sweeter. You feel heady, weightless. Where are you? What are you?

Step inside. Let the dance change you.

Your heart becomes the mirror in which the story unfolds...
Initium juxtaposes the lyricism of Kathak with the spirited dynamics of modern dance, circus and folk theatre form, Yakshagana. Punctuated by special effects, this vivid spectacle is a must see for all the family!

Rhythmic soundscapes were produced by the internationally renowned DJ Per Qx, with eastern influences by Niraj Chag.
Initium is a South Asian dance-led contemporary spectacle conceived by Mira Kaushik in collaboration with Tony Charalambous.

We'd like to hear from you.
