Waterman's Art Centre: Escape into Life

Posted by Steve Bax on Nov 27, 09 05:49 PM in What's On

painting-041-(original-24x1.jpgEscape into Life, is a new exhibition of watercolours and illustrations by the Iranian born refuge artist, Bahar Yamini-Sharif, who moved to England following the Islamic Revolution and the eight year war.

Bahar, who has a master in Media & Film from Westminster University, studied Fine Art and Sculpture at the London Institute and Middlesex University.

The exhibition is at Waterman's Art Centre in London Road, Brentford, from December 2 until January 16.

Bashar began her education in Iran, studying Child Psychology at Meli University, but showed a great interest in the arts and studied it privately under the mastership of two of Iran's leading contemporary painters, Aydin Aghdashloo and Parvaneh Etemadi.

Her work has been inspired by the colour, textures and cultures of her homeland, Iran as well as its poetic tradition -- in particular modern poetry artist, Sohrab Sepehri (1928-1980) - her travels and Middle Eastern heritage. The paintings selected for Escape into Life deal with the 'painful but beautiful' moments of her life from childhood to her experiences of adulthood and the inevitability that "I cannot escape from life, I can only escape into life".

The walls of Watermans gallery will be divided thematically in to several sections that depict an aspect of the artist's struggles with these principles. We begin with Animus and Anima, where the yearning to prove her existence manifests itself in many visual forms; Dreamers, deals with the how the need to sleep and rest sustains creativity; Rest, where even in moments of stillness, meditation and contemplation, the artist journey's onwards inside her mind.

In, Dancers and Players, section of the paintings, she expresses her playful side and illustrates what makes her happy and proud, and finally, Animus, which Bahar explains are paintings that "depict my efforts to find my animus, the masculine principle as present in women, in order to topple the restrictions and constraints that my given positions carry."

This is important, for her, because "traditionally a woman's place has been inferior to that of the average man. In all of the different countries I have lived and all the cultures I have encountered, I have been pigeon-holed into positions and archetypes I have had to fulfil and abide. "

"I cannot escape from life, I can only escape into life
I can only use life to relieve me of life
It is the only thing I know and the only thing that knows me"
Please note that some of the paintings will be available for sale.
