A FOOT doctor and former British wrestling champion says he is honoured to be looking after some very important joints.

Professor Nicola Maffulli, 53, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at BMI Syon Clinic in Great West Road, Brentford, has been selected to lead the orthopaedic sports foot and ankle surgery service at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

He said: "I am a huge sports fan so I am really looking forward to being part of something so huge. I am too old to play sports well now, so I love watching it. I cannot wait to breathe in the atmosphere."

Mr Maffulli, who moved to England from Naples, Italy, in 1985, was selected by England to represent them at sambo wrestling (CORR) and won the British championships in 1987 and 1989.

He was also a keen judo fighter.

He says he entered his profession through his love of sports and enjoys telling patients any operation they are going to have, he has probably had himself.

During the games Mr Maffulli, who lives with his family in Ealing, will lead a team of six consultants and will be the field of play doctor for the Olympic wrestling tournament.

He added: "It is a fantastic honour to be selected for this position at what will be the biggest sporting event ever witnessed in London. My team and I are confident that should something happen we will be able to respond quickly and put into practice our years of rigorous medical training.

"Obviously, we hope that all the athletes have a safe and injury free games but should the worst happen they can feel confident that they will have access to the highest standards of medical care."

We'd like to hear from you.
